ISO 9001 is the international standard for a Quality Management System (QMS). It specifies requirements for how an organization documents, manages, and continually improves its processes to consistently meet customer and regulatory requirements.
Simple summary of its core ideas:
- "Say what you do, do what you say." Define your processes in documented procedures, then actually follow them.
- Documentation and records: maintain procedures and keep records that provide traceability and evidence that processes were followed.
- Consistency and repeatability: standardized processes yield predictable, repeatable results.
- Customer focus: understand and meet customer requirements.
- Continual improvement: use audits, corrective actions, and management review (often framed as Plan-Do-Check-Act) to keep improving.
It certifies the quality of the process/system, not directly the product itself—the premise being that disciplined, controlled processes produce consistent quality.
